What Minecraft is
Minecraft is a game whose whole world is made of square blocks. You can dig out any block and place it to build anything. There is no story you have to follow: build a house, run a farm, explore caves or go and find the dragon. Every world is randomly generated, so no two are the same.

New players can start in Survival on Peaceful or Easy. On Peaceful no monsters attack, so you can practise mining and crafting at your own pace.
Your first day in Survival
A Minecraft day lasts about 10 minutes, and monsters come out when it gets dark. Do it in this order.
Chop wood. Hold the button on a tree trunk until you have about 10 logs.
Make planks and a crafting table. Turn logs into planks, then make a crafting table from 4 planks.
Make sticks and a wooden pickaxe. Craft sticks, then a wooden pickaxe.
Mine stone. Use the wooden pickaxe on stone, then upgrade to stone tools: pickaxe, axe and sword.
Find coal and make torches. 1 coal and 1 stick make 4 torches. Light stops monsters spawning near you.
Build a shelter. Dig into a hill or wall yourself in, close every gap and put torches inside.
Make a bed. 3 wool and 3 planks. Sleeping skips the night, and the bed becomes your respawn point.
Resources and tools
Each tool tier can mine different things. You need the tier below to mine the next material.

Everything, and lasts longest
Gold tools mine very fast but break quickly and only mine what wood can, so they are rarely worth it.
Mobs to know
Zombie: walks straight at you and burns in sunlight.
Skeleton: shoots arrows from range. Duck behind a wall, then close in.
Creeper: creeps up quietly and explodes. When you hear the hiss, run.
Spider: climbs walls; in daylight it leaves you alone unless you hit it.
Enderman: tall and black. Do not look it in the eye, or it gets angry.
Cows, pigs, sheep and chickens never hurt anyone, and give you food, leather and wool.
The Nether and the End
The Nether
The Nether is a hot, dangerous underworld with materials you cannot find anywhere else.
Mine at least 10 obsidian (you need a diamond pickaxe).
Build a frame 4 wide and 5 tall (the four corners can be left out).
Light the inside with flint and steel, then walk in.
Never sleep in a bed in the Nether: it explodes.
The End
The End is the last dimension, where the Ender Dragon waits. You need to find an underground stronghold with an End portal and fill all 12 slots with Eyes of Ender. An Eye of Ender is made from an ender pearl and blaze powder from the Nether. Throw one into the air and it flies towards the stronghold.
