Foreign Aid
Contessa

How the game works

Everyone starts with 2 face-down cards (your influence) and 2 coins. On your turn you take one action, and you may use any character's action without actually having that card: you just claim to be that character.

But anyone can challenge. If they catch a lie, the liar reveals and loses a card. If the challenge is wrong, the challenger loses a card instead. Lose both cards and you're out; the last player standing wins.

Actions anyone can take

ActionEffectCan it be stopped?
IncomeTake 1 coinNo
Foreign AidTake 2 coinsThe Duke can block it
CoupPay 7 coins; one player loses a cardNo

If you start your turn with 10 or more coins, you must Coup.

AmbassadorDraw 2 cards, keep what you like, return 2Blocks stealing

A block is also a character claim, so it can be challenged too.

Challenges

  1. When someone claims a character, anyone may say "I don't believe you".
  2. The claimer must show the card.
  3. If they have it, the challenger loses a card, and the claimer shuffles that card back and draws a new one. The action goes ahead.
  4. If they don't, the claimer loses a card and the action fails.

Tips for a first game

  • Claim consistently. If you taxed as the Duke once, keep doing it; people believe you more.
  • Count cards. Each character has only 3 copies. If two Dukes are already face up, a third Duke claim is suspicious.
  • Don't challenge everything. A wrong challenge costs you a card; challenge when a lot is at stake.
  • Watch the coins. Whoever has 7 or more is ready to Coup and usually gets targeted.
